When his mother Augusta died of a Stroke in 1945, Ed was left all alone at the at age of 39. His mother was buried on 31 December. It was around 18 months later that Ed started to visit the Local Graveyard at night. He began to have strange visions, He had often thought of sex-change operation but couldn't afford it. He confessed to wanting to see a woman's body, so he went to the cemetery to talk to his Mother. He then Dug up the body of a woman who had just been buried and took it home. He would read newspaper for obituaries of woman and go and open their graves. During the period of 1950-54 he visited 3 local Cemeteries at night and exhumed about 9-10 Graves. He took out humans body organs and pieces and stored them into refrigerator. He used skullcaps for bowls, created hanging mobiles with various body parts and crafted lampshades and chair seats out of human skin. On special occasions like dancing in the moonlight, he would wear 'nipple belt' and a 'mammary vest'. With this process Ed would think he became of another sex.

Bernice's son was a Sheriff's deputy and realized that Ed was in town the day of her disappearance. When the Police went to his farm, they found her headless body in his shed and also found Mary Hogan's head in a brown bag. There was no electricity at Ed's house, Police had to use Flash lights. Police found many Masks made of human faces, many other heads, some stuffed with newspaper, some soaked in oil. The police thought that oil was to keep the skin from decaying. According to other local farmers, Ed Gein was never expected to be a Murderer as he had been quiet and hard working person. Police had found many more unexpected stuffs at Ed's farm like:
